How to identify the correct Dell charger

Connector type & size: Dell primarily uses barrel plugs with an ID “centre pin”.
The two most common are 4.5×3.0 mm (slim, blue) and 7.4×5.0 mm (large). Many newer systems also support
USB-C Power Delivery (PD). Match your laptop’s charging port.
Wattage rating: Choose the same or higher wattage than the original (never lower).
Typical Dell ratings: 45–65W (Inspiron/Latitude small), 90–130W (XPS/Larger Latitude/Precision thin),
180–240W (G-Series/Precision), and 240–330W (Alienware/high-end Precision). Check your old adapter label.
Voltage & current: Most Dell barrel adapters output 19–19.5V (e.g. 19.5V⎓3.34A = 65W; 19.5V⎓6.7A = 130W).
USB-C models require the correct PD profiles (often 20V/3.25A ≈ 65W, 20V/6.75A ≈ 135W on select Dell USB-C bricks).

Charging tips & best practice

A higher-wattage genuine-spec charger is safe; the laptop only draws what it needs. Avoid going below the original wattage.
Tip sizes are not cross-compatible: 4.5×3.0 and 7.4×5.0 are different (and both use a centre-pin ID). Match the connector that fits your laptop.
For USB-C, use a PD charger that advertises the required 20V profile and an E-Marked cable. Some Dell models require up to 130W over USB-C; use the correct rated adapter.
If you see “Adapter not recognised”, reseat the plug fully, check the centre pin is straight/clean, and confirm the wattage/connector match.

FAQs

Can I use a 90W charger on a laptop that came with 65W?

Yes — higher wattage is fine (and may charge faster while in use). Do not use a lower-wattage adapter than specified.

4.5×3.0 vs 7.4×5.0 — which do I need?

Match the plug that physically fits your laptop. Many thin-and-light models use 4.5×3.0; older/larger and high-wattage models often use 7.4×5.0.

Will a USB-C PD charger work with my Dell?

Only if your laptop supports USB-C charging. For systems that require 130W over USB-C, choose a properly rated adapter; 65–100W units are suitable mainly for light use on higher-power models.

Does the package include a UK mains lead?

Yes — a UK 3-pin lead is included for UK orders unless otherwise stated on the product page. EU/US cords may be available as options.
